Deep dives with great vis aren't always the best...
Although the water depth barely exceeds 3m, a "muck dive" beneath Chaloklum pier is becoming an increasingly popular pass-time, particularly amongst Koh Phangan's dive staff.
Often littered with debris and detritus, the area beneath the pier acts as a sheltered nursery area for juveniles of many fish species, as well as an ideal habitat for creatures seldom seen at the popular dive locations.
It is not uncommon to find Boxfish, Nudibranchs, Flatworms, Sea Slugs or the rarely seen juveniles of various Batfish species.
The obvious benefit of diving in such shallow water is length of time available, with 2 - 3 hours being easily achievable without any concerns over decompression limits.
